Huntington’s Disease - Symptoms, Causes, Treatment

Huntington’s Disease, a rare, inherited neurological disorder remains largely misunderstood by the general public. In a recent segment, Wendy Senior Gomez, Speech-Language Therapist, and Wendy Aqui, a dedicated primary caregiver to Huntington’s patients, spoke out about the realities of living with and caring for individuals affected by the condition. They described Huntington’s as a very challenging disease marked by a progressive decline in physical, cognitive, and emotional functioning. Symptoms often include involuntary movements, speech and swallowing difficulties, memory loss, and significant changes in behaviour. Wendy Aqui highlighted the emotional toll on both patients and families, noting that although the disease is very real, awareness in Trinidad and Tobago remains low. Despite this, there is a growing support system for HD patients and caregivers across the country.
