Mambi a young girl who embodies the experience of self-education living with her widowed father, discovers he suffers from a gambling addiction resulting to unending debts.David turns into a runaway when creditors come knocking leaving Mambi to deal with the chaos. She embarks on gambling in street games and with a winning streak Mambi pays off the debts then goes searching for her father and she brings him home.Pa Dan, the neighborhood drunk determined to change the course of her life begins to meddle. He takes Mambi to a school to show her what children her age should be doing. Mambi in an attempt to repress her want for a formal education and a normal childhood creates Mbassi a fictional character who tries to convince her that she is wrong.
